Suddenly mom's Armageddon pantry isn't so crazy!

We have over 2' of snow right now and it is still coming down in this weekend's big snowstorm.

Hmmmm...it seems that suddenly ol' mom doesn't seem quite so crazy, after all. My kids have been laughing at my "Armageddon Pantry" for years.

Nobody's laughing now, though. Instead, they are enjoying the fact that we have plenty to eat, lots of toilet paper, board games, books and a way to cook, stay warm, heat, and light the place if the power goes out.

Maybe, just maybe, they will think ol' mom isn't quite so crazy, after all.

Then, again...probably not. After all, they are young and invincible.

Let's face it...a month from now, nobody will remember that we were holed up and comfy while everyone else was scrambling, complaining, and flipping out. I will just have to live with the quiet satisfaction of knowing that I planted one more seed this weekend.

Works for me...

You might send home the point by asking one of them to run out for some milk...?

I live a long way from town on gravel roads in a very rural region of Western Canada. We would never tease anybody for having lots of supplies!!!

Good on You for show the way to others! :ARMS1:

Now try not to rub it in too much, they got the picture.
Wait till the next false flag event hits, they'll be even more serious...much more serious!

You can lead a horse to water but sometimes actions speak louder than words.
You're awesome Silver Belle, keep up the hard work.:23_28_100s:

Precisely!

Planting those seeds quietly is more effective than the smug 'I told you so' every time. I will just keep baking and cooking things that make the house smell wonderful and reek of 'comfort food' and they will be brainwashed before they realize it.

If anything, tell them they should at least learn from this and next time, you're coming to their house.

Screw that noise. Lock the pantry and don't let anyone in until they get on their knees and tell you "you were right and I was wrong" and then make them stand on their tippy toes and turn around three times with their hands on their heads.

Oh, and before they cozy up to your heat, at least one lap around the house in their skivvies.

They'll know what's what after this I promise!

You are absolutely right.

When I was their age -- and, actually, well into my 30's -- I thought my dad was a total nutjob. The man was overly prepared for every emergency - and then some. When we were in our 20's (as my own children are right now) my sister and I would roll our eyes and nod in false agreement, just to get him to shut up about how we should prepare for this or that. I see the same response from my two at the same age. They consider me as crazy as I considered my own dad. I am as flattered as can be!

I thought my parents were the dumbest people alive...until I moved out. Now I find myself calling them 2-3 times a week for advice, recipes, "how do i fix a leaking faucet" how-to's, etc...

Yep, the older you get the smarter your parents are.

Kids always weigh in on the 'cool' factor... fancy cars, big TVs and iPods,,, nothing cool about a big pile of food and a 5K generator.

Not until they're out of the nest for a while will they see what's really important ('cool').

And why is it no one is considered wierd for having car/home/heath insurance? I look at preps like insurance, hoping I'll never need to use them. Just like you don't go around hoping to get into a car wreck to do a 'test run' on your insurance.

My wife told the kids the time for parental nuturing is over, however she backslides, but independence is a wonderful lesson to be taught to teenagers at the appropriate time.:cooler:

Nesting Cajuns are not a pretty sight, better to scatter em while you can.:36_1_30:

We still love them.

Yep...mine are out of the nest, but in college and home for the holidays. I keep making my nest smaller and smaller -- still love them, but they need to fly on their own wingpower.

LOL! So true. I gave mine enough money to get to a job on the island one way. With a 10 hr drive and a very expensive ferry in between, my pantry is safe. But I didn't do it for that reason, I did it because there are no jobs in this town, none. 6 of our 8 mills shut down last year and the remaining two have plenty of down time. The drug scene is unbelievable now and most kids are on pogey or the dole and getting into serious trouble. She was starting to hang with a bad crowd, so I gave her the boot, doing well now!! :ok:

I'm glad I found this thread, Silver Belle. I'm still trying to get my mom to stock up on more than three days worth of food.

Silver Belle, Excellent work showing the kids some preps...
This is just a sh*ts and giggles suggestion and it is probably "pushing it", but how about kicking off the main power switch for a few hours???...Huddled around the kitchen table eating mom's chow by kerosene lamp and playing cards.
ahh never mind, just another brewer brain drizzle.
Good luck and have a good holiday season with the kids.

Yes...but not anything that I cannot live without if I absolutely have to. I am addicted to Diet Coke -- something that I will be giving up cold turkey come January 1, so it will be a non-issue when something bigger happens.

Of course, that was the one thing they noticed when I slipped up and made the comment that I was craving that stupid stuff. "Hmmm...looks like the Armageddon Pantry doesn't have everything after all, does it, mom?" was the response -- though it was said mostly in jest and with an accompanying grin -- so I knew that it was just to get a reaction from me. They were actually quite gracious this weekend.

Why don't you just quit cold turkey a bit early, you're already a day or two up on it. Get it over with since you've already started...
